Volunteer Overview
All volunteers shall act in accordance with District policies, regulations, and school rules.
Volunteers are individuals with prolonged or recurring involvement with students and school programs. Visitors and volunteers have different requirements.

Important Update: Annual Mandated Reporter Training
Effective July 1, 2026, all SUSD volunteers must complete Mandated Reporter Training each year.
Pursuant to Senate Bill 848, some school volunteers are now considered Mandated Reporters under California law. This change took effect January 1, 2026.
To serve as a cleared volunteer, the following requirements must be completed:
- Fingerprint clearance
- Upload proof of negative TB test
- Upload proof of Annual Mandated Reporter Training
- Receive authorization and approval by each site administrator for the school selected

Volunteer Requirements
Volunteer Application
Individuals interested in volunteering must complete the volunteer application through Be A Mentor.
Fingerprint Clearance
Department of Justice and FBI fingerprint clearance is required for all volunteers.
TB Clearance
All volunteers, including parents, must provide proof of a TB test dated within the previous four years. The TB test may not expire during the school year in which the individual volunteers.
How to Complete Mandated Reporter Training
Volunteers must create an account through the Keenan SafeSchools training website. A registration key is not required.
Register for Mandated Reporter Training
After creating an account, select and complete the training titled Mandated Reporter: Child Abuse and Neglect.
After completing the training:
- Download your certificate and keep it for your records
- Email your certificate to Keenantraining@stocktonusd.net for verification and clearance
Bring Proof to Fingerprinting Appointment
Volunteers must bring their Mandated Reporter Training certificate or proof of completion with them when they come in for fingerprinting, just like the TB clearance requirement.
This helps SUSD verify that the annual training requirement has been completed before fingerprinting is processed.
Overnight Field Trips
Volunteers participating in overnight field trips must complete all applicable volunteer requirements and maintain required clearances.

Do parents visiting a classroom need to become volunteers?
Not necessarily. Parents wishing to visit their student's classroom should coordinate directly with the school site.

More Frequently Asked Questions About Volunteering
What do I bring with me?
- Valid government-issued photo ID that is not expired.
- TB test result dated within the last 4 years.
- Mandated Reporter Training certificate or proof of completion.
- Completed Live Scan form.
Photos of IDs are not accepted. Volunteers must bring proof of Mandated Reporter Training before fingerprinting is processed.
What will it cost me?
There is no charge for volunteer applicants.
When can I come in?
Applicants must register and be approved through the Be A Mentor website before fingerprinting.
Approval must come from the school site. The fingerprinting office cannot approve applications on behalf of schools.
How long do results take?
Fingerprint results may take from 1 day to 6 months. Most results are returned within 1–2 weeks.
Who can I contact?
For application updates, site approval, or badge pickup, contact the individual school site.

How are applicants fingerprinted?
Applicants are fingerprinted electronically using Live Scan. Results are submitted to DOJ and FBI.
Fingerprinting is not used to verify residency status.
Do I need to be fingerprinted again?
No, if you continue volunteering each school year. If there is a gap of two or more school years, fingerprinting must be completed again.
How do I know I am cleared?
Once fingerprint results and required documentation are verified, your status will be updated in Be A Mentor.
You will receive a portal notification when your badge has been mailed to the school site.
How do I renew my badge?
Volunteers must renew badges at the start of each school year.
Bring an updated Live Scan form, valid ID, and proof of Annual Mandated Reporter Training. TB tests are required every 4 years.
