Program Definition

Ethnic Studies is the intersectional examination of historic and contemporary narratives, contributions, struggles, and resistance by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, as well as other marginalized communities*. The program examines historical and sociological content analyzing how colonialism, race, and racism have shaped social, cultural, and political forces.

It analyzes identity intersectionality including race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality, and belief systems. The program highlights local Stockton narratives while connecting to national and global events. Ethnic Studies empowers students to become ethical, effective, and empathetic social justice scholar-leaders.

Statement of Purpose

The Stockton Unified School District Ethnic Studies program empowers students by exploring the rich, interconnected histories, cultures, and identities of Black, Indigenous, People of Color* and historically marginalized communities. Through culturally relevant and community-responsive practices, students learn to critically analyze oppression and work in solidarity to create a more just and equitable world. Students develop skills in love, respect, reflection, hope, solidarity, critical consciousness, wellness, healing, and transformation to become scholars, leaders, and agents of change.

Ethnic Studies Community Collaborative (ESCC)

The ESCC provides an official space for students, teachers, staff, families, and community members to collaborate on the SUSD Ethnic Studies curriculum. Inspired by the student-led movement that created the College of Ethnic Studies in 1969, the ESCC ensures the program reflects the needs and desires of the community while increasing students' knowledge of racial, ethnic, and ancestral histories.
