Public Records Request
Access to District Records
Public Records Requests
The Board of Trustees recognizes the public's right to access District records. Stockton Unified School District provides reasonable access to public records during normal business hours in accordance with the law. Certain records may be exempt from disclosure under the California Public Records Act (CPRA) or other applicable laws.
Board Policy and Administrative Regulation 1340
Requests for public records must be submitted to the Office of Constituent Services. In response to a CPRA request, the Director of Constituent Services or designee will make reasonable efforts to locate requested records, including emails, texts, instant messages, and other electronic communications.
What to Expect from a CPRA Request
Within 10 days of receiving a CPRA request, the District must determine whether the request seeks disclosable records and notify the requester of its decision. If records are disclosable, the notice must include an estimated date and time for availability. The 10-day period is for the initial response, not the actual production of records.
Once records are ready, an exact copy will be provided unless doing so is impracticable. Electronic records must be made available electronically. The District may also post records online and direct requesters to them. If the requester cannot access the record online, a copy will be provided.
If a request is denied because the record is exempt from disclosure, the District must provide written notification that includes:
- The legal basis for the exemption
- The public interest rationale, if applicable
- The names and titles of individuals responsible for the denial
