Career Exploration – Success in the New Economy
Career exploration helps students understand their interests, strengths, and future opportunities. Students can begin exploring careers early and continue building career readiness skills throughout elementary, middle, and high school.
Career Awareness
Grades K–5
Successful careers begin early, at home and at school. Parents, teachers, and students should discuss interests and potential careers.
All students in Stockton Unified have access to Xello , which provides grade-level appropriate career awareness and exploration.
Encourage self-discovery, personal growth, and academic excellence. Reading, writing, math, science, and technology are especially important.
Career Exploration
Grades 6–8
Families should use Xello to identify career interests and explore high school programs that align with those interests.
Middle school students can also take electives such as PLTW , MESA, or AVID to build STEM and career readiness skills.
Career Preparation
Grades 9–12
High school years are critical for career preparation through CTE classes, industry certifications, and college pathways. Learning never stops.
Reading, writing, computers, math, and science remain important. SUSD offers a wide variety of Career and Technical Education Pathways at most high schools.
Good work habits, including attendance, behavior, and professionalism, are soft skills students practice in school and take to the workplace.
