About CORE Phonics
The CORE Phonics Survey is a battery of assessments determining student understanding of key phonics categories in kindergarten through third grade. Assessments are administered to students one-on-one, three times per year to monitor student growth, guide instruction, and target underdeveloped areas in student learning.
Areas assessed are determined by grade level and include:
- Uppercase letters
- Lowercase letters
- Vowels
- Vowel Sounds
- Blending of letters
- High Frequency Words
- Sentence Segmentation
- Words into Syllables
- Words into Phonemes

Who takes CORE Assessments?
- Students in Kindergarten through third grade
Testing Windows
- Fall: August 5 - August 30, 2024
- Winter: January 6 - January 31, 2025
- Spring: April 28 - May 23, 2025
