About CORE Phonics

The CORE Phonics Survey is a battery of assessments determining student understanding of key phonics categories in kindergarten through third grade. Assessments are administered to students one-on-one, three times per year to monitor student growth, guide instruction, and target underdeveloped areas in student learning.

Areas assessed are determined by grade level and include:

• Uppercase letters
• Lowercase letters
• Vowels
• Vowel Sounds
• Blending of letters
• High Frequency Words
• Sentence Segmentation
• Words into Syllables
• Words into Phonemes

Who takes CORE Assessments?

• Students in Kindergarten through third grade

Testing Windows

• Fall: August 5 - August 30, 2024
• Winter: January 6 - January 31, 2025
• Spring: April 28 - May 23, 2025
