Virtual Learning Academy

  • Stockton Unified is excited to announce the addition of Stockton Virtual Academy in the Fall of the 2021-2022 school year.  Designed to support students and families who found success during Distance Learning, Virtual Academy will allow students to continue with this model of learning.

    Students will be taught virtually by SUSD Teachers with SUSD Curriculum!  Stockton Unified wants to support students in any way possible, so our students can be successful!

    Virtual Academy enrollment will be closed Monday, August 9, and will resume Tuesday, August 10. Families can enroll or unenroll in Virtual Academy by visiting their in-person school starting Tuesday, August 10. Each site can help you to start or end your time in Virtual Academy.

    Frequently Asked Questions


    Who can apply for the Virtual Academy?

    Any current SUSD student or any school-age student interested in the Virtual Academy experience.

    What does the day look like for our children?  Days/ hours, with the teacher/ independent?

    Students will be expected to log in 5 days a week during the average school day hours.  This will vary depending on the grade level or the class in which they are enrolled. Daily lessons with Zoom/Meet or other platforms will be expected, and student participation is required. 

    • TK to Grade 3 — daily synchronous live instruction for all students throughout the school year.
    • Grades 4 to 8 — both daily live interaction and at least weekly synchronous instruction for all students throughout the school year.
    • Grades 9 to 12 — at least weekly synchronous instruction for all students throughout the school year.
      • “Live Interaction” means interaction between the student and local educational agency classified or certificated staff, and may include peers, provided for the purpose of maintaining school connectedness, including but not limited to: wellness checks, progress monitoring, provision of services, and instruction. This interaction may take place in person or in the form of internet or telephonic communication.
      • “Synchronous Instruction” means classroom-style instruction or designated small group or one-on-one instruction delivered in person, or in the form of internet or telephonic communications and involving live, two-way communication between the teacher and student. Synchronous instruction shall be provided by the teacher of record for that student.

    What is expected of Parents/Guardians during Virtual Academy?

    Completion of and agreement to the Parent Compact for Virtual Academy; agreeing to the following:

    • Ensure a proper working environment, including workspace for your child.
    • Monitor and support with daily lessons the student is working on, or assigned by the teacher.
    • Support the student with technology issues, receiving training as needed.
    • Partner with the classroom teacher to monitor student behavior during class lessons, meetings, small group lessons, and individual support meetings.
    • Attend any additional meetings to support the academic success of the student.

    What is needed to enroll?


    Will my child be able to participate in their Home School activities such as sports?

    Students who are in good academic standing may participate if eligible.

    Can my student enroll in the Virtual Academy if they have an IEP, 504, Special Education?

    The site IEP/504 Team will hold an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) Meeting, with you over Zoom, or potentially in-person to discuss if your child being home ensures their least restrictive environment and is the best fit for your child's needs.

    Can my child return to in-person instruction should I feel they should return?

    Students may return to in-person instruction. This is best at the end of a trimester/semester or at the end of the year.  Frequent movement back and forth does not help the student academically. If a student is enrolled in a specialty school or program they forfeit their placement in the program. Upon their desire to re-enroll in face-to-face instruction, they will not receive priority re-enrollment.

    What are the attendance requirements?  

    Students will be expected to:

    • Attend, be visible, and actively participate in all teacher meetings, small group meetings, and individual sessions they are assigned to.
    • Attend, be visible, and actively participate in additional meetings, training, or support groups with staff from the school to support their educational success.
    • Students who do not meet the requirements will be put into a tiered intervention to re-engage them in Virtual Learning; which includes home visits and required parental meetings.
    • Students of Virtual learning are asked to remain in the virtual program for the entire grading period

    How will my student get to socialize, talk with peers, and have their social/emotional needs supported?

    Students will have ongoing access to peers during the class.  Teachers will ensure students have time to share, learn from, and engage with their peers.  Students will have opportunities to meet with virtual counseling services (with permission).

    What is the “Written Learning Agreement”?

    The Learning Agreement is a document between the Virtual Academy and the parent.  It is required for a student to begin learning on independent study/virtual learning.  It sets the expectations for learning and for what is expected of parents.

    So, is it just like Distance Learning from the Covid shutdown of 20-21?

    Yes and No:

    • Yes - it is a blend of live instruction and student independent learning:  whole class, small group, and individual.  
    • No - students will be expected to participate in more independent learning than they did during Distance Learning.  Students in lower grades will have more daily contact than students in high school.

    What courses can my students take in High School?

    A course catalog is available here. All courses being offered at Stockton School Sites will also be available virtually.

    What about Lab-Based Courses in high school Sciences?

    Students will have opportunities to attend Saturday Lab sessions with school sites in person, when available, to show their understanding of lab-based courses to receive credit for the course.

    What are the district’s next steps for Virtual Academy?

    • Solidify teachers for the program.
    • Determine the technology needs of students (who don’t already have a laptop from last year)
    • Provide Professional Development for teachers to gear up for Virtual Academy.
    • Organize a public information gathering on the district website.
