Sent on August 6, 2021 through the CDE Assessment Updates: "The 2021-22 Physical Fitness Test (PFT) has not been suspended. Local educational agencies (LEAs) will be required to administer the PFT during one of these months in 2022: February, March, April, or May. The CDE, along with external partners, is working to prepare additional instructions on the PFT. More information and instructions will be provided as they become available.

The 2019-20 and 2020-21 PFTs were suspended; makeup testing is not required. The PFT exemptions for students who did not take the test in grade nine (those current tenth and eleventh grade students) are limited to those exemptions identified in Education Code sections 51241 and 51242. An exemption based on pupil satisfactorily meeting five or the six standards of PFT is not available for these particular students."

Physical Fitness Test Overview

  •

What is the Physical Fitness Test (PFT)?

The California Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is a comprehensive, health-related physical fitness battery of tests for students in grades 5, 7, and 9.

This test is in accordance with California Education Code Section 60800 and the California Code of Regulations, Title 5, Section 1041.

The State Board of Education (SBE) designated the FITNESSGRAM as the assessment for the PFT.

    What is the FITNESSGRAM?

The FITNESSGRAM was developed by the Cooper Institute to measure student fitness level.

These categories are further broken down to six fitness zones:

    1. Aerobic Capacity
    2. Body Composition
    3. Abdominal Strength and Endurance
    4. Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility
    5. Upper Body Strength and Endurance
