  • Notice: Parking and Student drop off on Turnpike Avenue

Edison's main parking lot is located on Turnpike Ave. across from the Dollar General grocery store. The two lanes of traffic on Turnpike Ave. are separated by double lines. To clarify the legality of crossing double yellow lines to drop off students, the vehicle code is listed below. In summary, you may legally turn left and cross the double yellow lines when entering or leaving* the Edison parking lot as it is a private driveway; you may not cross the double yellow lines to make a U-turn as this area is considered a business district due to the presence of the grocery store.

*Traffic on turnpike is increased during drop off and pickup times and as such turning left is not advised as doing so hinders the flow of traffic and could potentially in danger the safety others. It is important to note that when exiting a private driveway onto a highway, it is the duty of the driver entering the highway to yield right away to drivers already traveling on said highway.

The following is the California vehicle code section 21460:

    1. (a) If double parallel solid yellow lines are in place, a person driving a vehicle shall not drive to the left of the lines, except as permitted in this section.

*(d) The markings as specified in subdivision (a), (b), or (c) do not prohibit a driver from crossing the marking if (1) turning to the left at an intersection or into or out of a driveway or private road….

    * Subsection (d) highlights the ability to cross over double yellow lines whenever a vehicle is entering into or leaving from private driveway.
