Letter from the principal

  • Dear Parents/Guardians,

On behalf of the staff at Van Buren Elementary, we would like to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year! We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential. We are excited to continue the great work we did together last year and we recognize that in order to be successful in school, children need support from both home and school. We also know that a strong partnership with you will make a significant difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring that your child/ren:

    • Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready to learn
    • Completes all homework assignments given by teachers
    • Reads daily to develop and improve literacy skills
    • Shares school experiences with you so you are aware of your child’s school life
    • Informs you if they need additional support in any subject or area
    • Knows that you expect them to succeed in school

Throughout the year Van Buren will provide many opportunities for parents to volunteer and contribute to the school’s program and its operation. The school will also provide opportunities for parents to collaborate with each other, the administration, staff members, and community organizations through our monthly Parents’ Coffee Hour meetings.  We encourage you to attend these meetings where school safety, current academic programs, and community resources are just some of the topics being discussed. In addition, the school will be communicating with you via phone messages, email, monthly calendar, and a monthly parent newsletter regarding events and meetings taking place at Van Buren.

In the packet, you will find important information and a number of documents that need to be read, signed, and returned to the school. If you have any questions about the rules and expectations, please feel free to contact me, Assistant Principal Ms. Villasenor or your child’s teacher to discuss your questions. It is important that you and your child are fully informed regarding standards related to appropriate behavior to ensure a safe and productive school year. Please review the SUSD parent handbook as well as the Van Buren Parent/Student Handbook, included in the packet.

The Van Buren staff feel very privileged to have you and your child be part of our school family. We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you on August 1, 2019.

    Isabel Arellano, Principal
