# Math

• ## Algebra 1 and 2

Algebra 1-2 is a course in the traditional system sequence of Pre-Algebra (offered in 7th grade), Algebra 1-2 (offered in 8th or 9th grade), Geometry 1-2, and Algebra 3-4. Students learn to reason symbolically. Students understand and solve linear and quadratic equations; use operations on monomial and polynomial expressions; and extend their mathematical reasoning, including justifying steps in algebraic procedures and checking algebraic arguments for validity.

## Algebra 3 and 4

In Algebra 3-4 students demonstrate their advanced knowledge of real numbers. Students solve problems in functions, systems of equations, curve sketching, equations of high degrees, matrices, groups and group properties, advanced manipulative techniques,  sequences, sums, and statistics.

## Geometry

In this course, students learn the skills and concepts of a plane and solid geometry. Students develop the ability to construct formal, logical arguments and proofs in geometric settings and problems.

## Pre-Calculus

This is the fourth year of high school mathematics. Students learn the major components of trigonometry, analytic geometry, and functional analysis. Graphing calculators are used to visualizing a variety of elementary functions. This course prepares students for the calculus sequence, starting in high school or in college. Some discrete math topics are covered to facilitate taking national exams such as SAT I and SAT II required by some universities and colleges. Students demonstrate knowledge of the above topics through the use of portfolios, projects, discussions, and tests.

## Calculus

Calculus 1-2 is intended to prepare students for college calculus. Students demonstrate knowledge of differentiation and integration and use their knowledge to find areas, volumes, and cube sketching. Using graphing calculators is highlighted.

## AP Statistics

The purpose of the AP course in statistics is to introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing and drawing conclusions from data. Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes:

1. Exploring Data: Describing patterns and departures from patterns
2. Sampling and Experimentation: Planning and conducting a study
3. Anticipating Patterns: Exploring random phenomena using probability and simulation
4. Statistical Inference: Estimating population parameters and testing hypotheses
