RIO 7TH AND 8TH GRADERS WIN GOLD IN 2019 NATIONAL ACADEMIC PENTATHLON

RIO CALAVERAS TEAMS WIN GOLD IN U.S. ACADEMIC PENTATHLON

Our Otters have done it, again! Congratulations to our Rio Calaveras Elementary Pentathlon teams, the 7th AND 8th grade National Academic Pentathlon Champions for the third consecutive year!

Twenty-three Rio Calaveras students and their coach Jennifer Duren traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to compete in the sixth annual United States Academic Pentathlon Nationals on May 17. This year’s theme was, “The 1960s: A Transformational Decade.” With overall scores of 20,505 (7th grade) and 21,298 (8th grade), our students once again demonstrated their ability to work hard as individuals and as a team.

Coach Duren and her teams began studying for the competition in August. Duren enriched her students’ studies of the 1960s with a field trip to San Francisco to visit the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, the Exploratorium for a laser demonstration, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Duren also held an 18-hour ‘Study-A-Thon’ to raise funds for their trips. The team met every Saturday this spring to study together. Duren says that the secret to their success is to keep it fun.

Congratulations to our outstanding students and their Coach Jennifer Duren, who led both teams to another stunning victory.
