Office of the Superintendent
Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year!
Dear Stockton Unified Families,
August 1, 2019
Dear Stockton Unified Community,
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I look forward to visiting all our schools in the coming weeks and hope to meet many of you. As we start, I want to be very clear on our mission: We lift students out of poverty, and we do this by preparing all of our students to graduate from high school college, career, and community ready. Our students, families, and community are counting on us. In order to succeed, we must share an unshakeable belief that ALL youth can and will graduate college, career, and community ready.
My number one goal is to lead Stockton to be not just the place someone is from, but the place where someone returns to and thrives in. The place that marks you as having arrived in your life when you get to work and live in Stockton.
After completing a period of listening and learning over the past year, it is time to propose our way forward. A way to begin the process of dramatically improving the outcomes for all youth in academics, community participation and responsibility, and career preparation. We will work diligently on the following three goals.
Goal 1: Increase student achievement by providing high-quality first instruction supported by a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to graduate every single youth college, career, and community ready.
Goal 2: Provide equitable and healthy learning environments that enhance the social-emotional and academic learning for all students utilizing a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
Goal 3: Create a culture of inclusion and collaboration with families and community stakeholders that builds meaningful partnerships focused on increasing student engagement and family and community participation in support of developing leadership at all levels.
This will be helped by the guiding principle that we will build a system of great schools and not simply a great school system. Our students are perfectly able to perform beyond what we have seen in this district. We can and will move academic achievement forward. I have every confidence that our teachers and schools can do the work necessary. We have worked all summer to reflect on the 2018-2019 school year and prepare for the year to come.
This year, we are adding dozens of additional Mental Health Clinicians trained in school system functioning and learning, as well as how students’ behavior and mental health impacts their ability to be successful in school. We are launching new Math and English Language Arts curriculum for grades TK-12 and we have restructured our family engagement and education efforts to ensure Stockton Unified School District’s Family Engagement Department will coordinate and integrate (when practical) programs with the district’s Early Childhood Education Department, Language Development Office, and Special Education Department. The Family Engagement Department will co-plan and modify existing training to meet the needs of its parent audience. In addition, the Department will seek feedback and resource requests from various parent stakeholder groups for future training and parent involvement opportunities.
We are focused on our most critical areas: raising achievement while reducing chronic absenteeism, suspensions, and expulsions among our students.
We remain committed to providing our students with safe and welcoming schools. Our district is a Safe Haven. All students are welcome, regardless of status.
As students, teachers, school staff, district employees, parents, and community members, I ask for your dedication in the coming months. You must continue to demand more from us. It is our goal to lift students out of poverty through excellent instruction and a top-notch education. Let’s commit ourselves to make that happen.
Soon you will see our latest school achievement reports posted on the school websites. Our performances, graduation and dropout rates and more can be found on the California Dashboard at www.caschooldashboard.org.
Once again, I look forward to working with all of you to make #stocktonstrong our reality.
