I decided to become a teacher because I want to have an impact in the lives of children who have been oppressed by the society we live in. As a teacher, I plan to help students succeed in a society that has been geared to only benefit a certain group of people. I believe in guiding students to critically analyze social injustices that has occurred in our society and all over the world. Through this, I want to show the students how these social injustices are still occurring today and how it correlates with the past. From this I plan to guide students in acquiring the skills and knowledge to make changes in society.
I also believe in creating a classroom environment where students feel welcomed in the class. I do this by greeting students at the door, having team building lessons, and also having check ins and check outs every week. I believe in creating a classroom environment where students are able to converse, work together, and also debate. I believe in creating a learning environment that fosters a growth mind set, where students can continue building their content knowledge and skills.
I firmly believe in involving the parents/guardians into the students learning. It is important for parents/guardians to feel welcomed in my classroom. I want them to know that they can have a positive impact in their child's learning. I believe in keeping the parents/guardians updated in their child's growth and areas where they can continue to grow. I plan to do this by keeping a steady line of communication via telephone and email. I also believe in conducting home visits and provide parents/guardians with available resources in school and in their community.
As a teacher I also believe to continue to develop as an educator. I plan to do this through self-reflecting on my teaching and seeking constructive criticism on areas where I can improve as a teacher. I also have gone to numerous of professional development workshops where I have learned new teaching strategies that I can implement in my classroom. I believe that it is important to continue to grow as teacher in order to help improve your student's learning.
